Blog Action Day - Poverty

Time to get serious for a day.....

I find it quite difficult to write about poverty. It's such a relative term. It can mean anything from not being able to afford your '5 A Day' or pay your fuel bill to not even having a few grains of rice to feed your kids.

Over the last decade or so the western world seems to have hijacked the term, and to my mind, somewhat demeaned it.

I hear the word 'poverty' more times a day than I can count and going by the context in which it's used - I have spent much of my adult life in it!

There has been many a winter that I've stuck on another few jumpers and wrapped up under a quilt on the settee with my kids just to keep warm because I couldn't afford to put the heating on. There've been quite a few times where nothing but a jam sandwich has been the daily meal. Hand-me-downs have been a constant in my kids wardrobe and they've gone more than one christmas with just a colouring book and a few crayons under the tree.

But that's not real poverty. Or is it?

If poverty is not having the standard of living that is enjoyed by your countrymen...then yes. It is. Or is poverty being devoid of everything that makes life bearable...cos then - no. It's not.

Poverty is more than just not having much....

Poverty is being stuck. It's a place that you can't get away from. It's a world ridden with disease, starvation and lonliness. It's a cycle that's fuelled by high mortality and lack of education. A place where you not only feel helpless - but where you actually are.

And that's why I don't live in poverty - because in the end, I'm not helpless.

I got out of poverty. Because I could.

But there are still those that can't. Those who can't help themselves. There are places where the very infrastructure won't allow you to be something more, and that's where we come in.

It's not about how many pennies you can pop into the charity box - we've all got fewer of those these days.

It's about keeping the word 'poverty' for those who deserve it. It's about keeping up the pressure on the governments and the organisations of the world that are in a position to help. It's about spreading healthcare. It's about education. It's about knowing that it's unacceptable for any human being to live this way in the 21st century.

We're a cynical world, full of doubts that our money is doing any good. Watching governments, oil industries and drug companies sapping the nations that need it most of their natural wealth. So let's do something about it.

It shouldn't be up to rockstars to 'Make Poverty History' and it shouldn't be up to us.......but unless we make a noise about it - nothing's going to change and sooner or later - we'll forget about it as the troubles of our own lives take their toll.

So while we can -while we're not yet too damn tired to have one more rage against the machine - just do something. Write an email to your Prime Minister/ President - work with a local school to get books out to kids who haven't got any. Find out what your local Red Cross can do to help......or - if you can - buy a kid a laptop.

Make Poverty History

I know we're tired of having to do something to change things - but just one more click on either of the links above - or one more letter to a world leader can be the one that makes the difference.

Ye Olde Shoppe - Frozen In Time

Cool little film about a shop in Lancashire left frozen in time until now.

Click the picture to play. (Viewers outside the UK may not be able to play it - sry :( - cool lil shop though -left closed for around 40 years before a builder found it -shelves, stock, everything!...try the BBC channel on youtube - maybe you'll have some luck.)

From 'Futility Closet' a beautiful story about Koko the gorilla.

"Koko the gorilla is famous for mastering more than 1,000 signs based on American Sign Language, which she uses to communicate with Stanford researchers.

That's not all she's learned from humans. One day her attendants discovered that a steel sink in her enclosure had been torn from its moorings. When they confronted her, she pointed to her pet kitten.

"Cat did it," she signed."

The cat mentioned was a cat that Koko had asked for herself and had given the name 'All Ball'. Unfrotunately, the little kitten escaped from Kokos cage later that year and was killed by a car.
Koko was distraught and talked about her kitten soon after -

"When asked, "Do you want to talk about your kitty?"
Koko signed, "Cry."
"What happened to your kitty?"
Koko answered, "Sleep cat."
When she saw a picture of a cat who looked very much like All Ball, Koko pointed to the picture and signed, "Cry, sad, frown."

Japanese Maid Service

Yet another reason why Japan rocks!
In the Akihabara's Refresh Club, for the tiny sum of $25 you can get one of their maids to come and play Wii Fit with you......and yes, they are dressed like the pics.
Their statement says...
"Playing Wii Fit by yourself is lonely. But here, playing along with a maid makes exercising enjoyable"
If you've been living under a rock and don't know what Wii Fit is...then check out the vid.

The wonderful Japanese also have 'Maid Cafes' where you can be served by equally beautiful babes, although there are rules. The following things MUST NOT be done

  • Touching a maids body
  • Asking for a maids phone number
  • Asking for a maids email address
  • Infringing on a maids privacy. Ask what time she gets off work
  • Stalking or persistantly picking up a maid
  • Waiting for her to come in and out or lingering outside the cafe
  • Harming the employees, guests or neighbours of the cafe
  • Taking photos of the maids or the interior or exterior of the cafe
  • Bringing outside food or drink to the cafe
  • Smoking on the stairs outside the cafe
Pfft! These people are no fun...lol

From starwars.com via neatorama comes this little gem of a movie.

Pendulum Press released an obscure educational kit in 1978 that's been all but forgotten by old school Star Wars fans and likely totally unknown to the digital-savvy students of todays classrooms.

A Word About The Changes

First of all I'd like to say thanks to the visitors who've been here since the beginning and hello to all the new visitors that have been dropping by lately.

Things seem to have been getting busy since a few of my favourite (and best) blogs on the internet have picked up a few of my posts....thanks to them for linking to me and thanks for all the new people you've pointed my way. Also thanks to those who've stumbled and tumblred me - it's much appreciated.

There have been a few changes to the blog as my regular readers will have noticed. There's been the addition of the sitemeter tag which allows to me to see all of your bank details and gives me access to your webcams.....I have a new 'tag cloud' which will take you to my links on Technorati and there's also a 'favourite this blog on technorati' button which if you all click I'll be extremely grateful....

You'll also now find, at the bottom of every post, a 'bookmark button' to make stumbling, facebooking, digging and twittering even easier for you.....I can be found on most of these places (except facebook...uurrgghhh.) just search for Mangawitch....

The newest addition though is the google ads....hopefully they won't get in your way and neither will they infect your computer with nastiness...so if you like this blog, give them a click each time you visit.

It'd be great to get a bit of feedback on the changes so please, whether you are an old or new visitor, feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think or what you'd like or wouldn't like to see on here in future.

So once again - thanks....and I hope I can keep you all happy (at least some of the time).
